Two men killed in shootout outside auto repair shop

Jackson Police are working to identify a suspect in a shooting that killed two men near downtown Jackson. Investigators said the men were shot dead Friday night outside an auto repair shop, two blocks from the federal courthouse. The West Street building, which is a few blocks from the heart of downtown Jackson, is riddled with bullets. The owner of the business, who did not want to be identified, said he was friends with one of the men who was killed – 24-year-old Hector Lopez. “He said, ‘I was shot. Someone shot me.’ I said, ‘Why are you calling me?’ And then he said, ‘Call the police,’ “said the owner. The other gunshot victim was Johnny Lopez, 22, police said. It is not known if the men were related. The owner doesn’t know why Lopez was in his store. “It’s hard to know. I talked to his sister and that’s what she said. You know? He was trying to drop a car off for repair,” said the store owner. Lopez’s car had a huge bullet hole in the left passenger window. Investigators said they did not believe the theft was a motive in the killings. Jackson is now approaching 150 homicides for the year.
