PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A major fire at an auto repair shop in North Phoenix is now under control. At one point, the smoke was visible for miles.
The fire broke out shortly before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at AZ Master Mechanics, a company near Cave Creek and Bell Roads. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the roof and quickly escalated the situation to a first alert, requesting assistance from additional crews. There were also concerns about possible hazardous materials, such as automotive oils, inside the business, so firefighters took a defensive stance to battle the blaze.
The fire started shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday near Cave Creek and Bell roads.
More than 50 firefighters responded and it took about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. Capt. Todd Keller of the Phoenix Fire Department said all auto shop workers escaped the building safely and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Cave Creek Road is closed, northbound and southbound, between Bell and Union Hills. Firefighters are asking motorists to avoid the area. Arizona’s family gathers additional information. Check back for updates.
