Concerns over planned Hinsdale auto shop

HINSDALE, IL — A planned auto repair shop for southwest Hinsdale has involved a neighboring homeowners association.

Samir and Ghada Sharabatee ask the village to allow Hinsdale Discount Tires and Automotive to open at 5837 S. Madison St.

JMS Auto Service was on site for years, but closed in 2019.

In February, the village plan commission unanimously recommended a permit for the business. But he added requirements such as limiting parking, painting building trim, limiting dumpsters to a fenced compound, and adding greenery like potted plants.

Wade Joyner, the Sharabatees’ attorney, acknowledged that the property was a bit run down.

“The owner is okay with some of these changes,” he said. “The green trim doesn’t look the best. It probably never was, unless it was painted in the 60s. So we’re going to replace it with a bright, shiny white. “

Ronald Hanson, president of the nearby Golfview Hills Homeowners Association, said JMS was a low-impact operation that didn’t use its five bays.

He said neighbors feared the new company would use up all the bays and expand the operation. He said Fuller’s Auto Service, 102 Chicago Ave., is similar in size, but is in a business district.

“If (Discount Tires) increases Fuller’s volume, it will have a huge impact on the residential area,” Hanson said. “Is this a suitable place in Hinsdale for an auto repair shop?” »

He suggested Hinsdale restrict the hours, number of employees, and bays used.

Village President Tom Cauley said Fuller has always kept his site clean and the village will make sure Discount Tires does the same.

Administrator Neale Byrnes told the Sharabatees: ‘We want your business to do well.

Trustees said they would revisit the matter at their May 17 meeting.
