Car workshop explosion in Midland sends two people to hospital

Thick black smoke and flames could be seen in the morning sky in Midland after an explosion at an auto shop.

CTV News has learned that the explosion happened Wednesday at Speedy Glass, at the corner of Yonge Street and Highway 93.

Crews say the call came in just after 8:15 a.m.

“There was a big bang! The doors exploded, then the roof blew off,” said Joe Hurdle, owner of the nearby Midas workshop.

Hurdle said he and his son rushed to help two men to safety as the square caught fire.

Witnesses said first responders arrived soon after.

Paramedics confirm they took two patients to hospital with minor injuries. They say all other occupants were able to escape unharmed.

Police have closed County Road 93 from the Balm Beach Road intersection north to the entrance to the Huronia Mall. It reopened shortly before 11 a.m.

The fire required around 30 firefighters to bring it under control.

“I would say 90% of the building was involved,” said Midland Fire Deputy Chief Ritch Lowell.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation. The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal was called for assistance.
